The Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering was founded in Nagatsuta Campus (currently Suzukakedai Campus) in April 1975, as a pioneering example of increasing the emphasis on graduate schools. When it was founded, the Interdisciplinary Graduate School consisted of 72 Chairs (Koza), 25 Fundamental Chairs (Kikan Koza, 13 new and 12 transferred) and 47 Cooperative Chairs (Kyoryoku Koza) which belonged to the various collaborating Research Laboratories. The School had 10 departments, namely, Information Processing, Electronic Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry and Engineering, Precision Machinery Systems, Materials Science and Engineering, Applied Electronic, Environmental Chemistry and Engineering, Life Chemistry, Energy Science and Systems Science.
During the decade from 1978 to 1987, 10 Chairs (three Fundamental Chairs and seven Cooperative Chairs) were added. Approaching life processes through chemistry was the educational and research objective of Life Chemistry Department, set up at the time of its foundation. This objective was then passed on to the School of Bioscience and Biotechnology (established in June 1990). Life Chemistry Department took this opportunity to change its name to Intelligence Science Department in April 1991. The department shifted its educational and research objective to intelligence, the ultimate of all life processes. With the cooperation of related departments, Intelligence Science Department relocated a substantial number of instructors, setting a precedent for self-transformation in the Interdisciplinary Graduate School.
In April 1993, the Department of Environmental Physics and Engineering, consisting of three Fundamental Chairs and seven Cooperative Chairs, was newly established. In addition, in April 1995, the Department of Urban Planning, Environmental Engineering and Disaster Engineering and Department of Energy Science were reorganized to form the Department of Built Environment and Department of Energy Science.
In April 1996, the Department of System Science and Intelligence Science were reorganized to form the Department of Computational Intelligence and Systems Science. In April 1997, the Department of Electronic Chemistry and Materials Science and Engineering were Divided into three Departments, that is , the Department of Innovative and Engineering Materials, Department of Electronic Chemistry, and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. Except for the Department of Environmental Physics and Engineering, all the Fundamental Chairs of these departments are Macro Chairs (Dai-koza) and the departments have also established positions for coordinate professors and associate professors, introducing new styles of organization. Moreover, the Department of Innovative and Engineered Materials was established in the Interdisciplinary Graduate School as the first department in Japan that advocates the creation of new fields of study.
In April 1998, the Department of Environmental Chemistry and Engineering was reorganized, and the Department of Environmental Physics and Engineering was reorganized to become the Department of Environmental Science and Technology.
In April 1999, the Department of Information Processing was reorganized, and the Department of Applied Electronics was reorganized to become the Department of Advanced Applied Electronics.
In April 2003, the Department of Precision Machinery Systems changed its name to the Department of Mechano-Micro Engineering, and in April 2005, the Department of Information Processing (Creative Department) and the Department of Advanced Applied Electronics were reorganized, and the Department of Electronics and Applied Physics and Department of Information Processing were newly formed.
Since its foundation 30 years ago, the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering has been constantly self-transforming. As of April 2008, it provides education and research in 77 Chairs (22 Fundamental Chairs (Macro Chairs) and 55 Cooperative Chairs (including 4 Macro Chairs)) and 11 departments.
