The Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Engineering consists of "Fundamental Chairs," which belong to the Graduate School itself, and "Cooperative Chairs," which are operated by professors who are associated with the University's research laboratories and research centers. To enlist external cooperation, the Fundamental Chairs invite instructors from external research laboratories that conduct advanced research to conduct education and research as members of the Chairs through mutual close cooperation.
The Interdisciplinary Graduate School is an independent graduate school that has no direct connection to any undergraduate department. It is a big school consisting of 11 departments. The areas of research are broadly divided into three groups, as shown in theEducation and Research: the Materials Group, the Environment and Energy Group, and the Information and Systems Group. This is a classification for the sake of expediency, so the descriptions of each area are very general. Each department and related area is listed in a matrix in tabular formEducation and Research. In this way, the school covers a broad range of areas.
