The goal of education and research in the Department of Built Environment is to develop a basic theory to create and maintain an affluent and pleasant living environment where people matter, and to apply the theory to the development of a human environment in new frontier spaces, such as outer space and deep underground, in addition to applying the theory to the redevelopment of existing cities. The department primarily focuses on people, and incorporates new fields of research outside the framework of traditional construction engineering from the perspective of understanding and creating, in terms of hardware and software, an environment which is historically sustainable. With the development of leading-edge technology, the department also considers new environments which, with people's expanding living space, will likely be encountered, and adopts an education and research system to cultivate talented people who will be able to contribute to future society.
