The objective of the Department of Innovative and Engineered Materials is to explore and create new functional materials which will develop next-generation science and technology. The department was established based on a new initiative in 1997. It has a flexible education and research system in which researchers from not only fields with adjacent boundaries but also distant fields can cooperate. As a collaborative research institute, the department receives cooperation from the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN), Toyota Central R&D Labs., Inc., and Industrial Property Cooperation Center.
